The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) will hold a public webinar on May 22, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM via Zoom. The webinar will feature two PIDS studies on labor inclusivity and skilled labor mobility in the Philippines and ASEAN Region.
The first study, “Inclusivity of Factor Flows in a Labor-Surplus Economy: Experience of the Philippines” is authored by Asian Institute of Management - Dr. Andrew L. Tan Center for Tourism OIC Executive Director John Paolo R. Rivera and De La Salle University (DLSU) Fellow and Professor Emeritus of Economics Tereso S. Tullao, Jr.. It examines the impact of labor emigration on wages, employment, and production in the Philippines’ capital-intensive and labor-intensive sectors, respectively represented by manufacturing and agriculture. The authors investigated whether deployment, remittances, and foreign direct investment (FDI) flows are inclusive, given the consequential employment opportunities specifically for unskilled workers. They looked at data from 1991 to 2021, revealing the need for the recalibration of strategies to achieve inclusive growth.
The second study, “Assessing the Readiness of Filipino MRA-supported Professions To Participate in the Mobility of Skilled Labor in the ASEAN Region: Lessons for APEC Economies”, is also authored by Dr. Rivera and Dr. Tullao, Jr., together with DLSU Ramon V. del Rosario College of Business Associate Dean Professor Cynthia P. Cudia. It delves into the mutual recognition arrangements (MRAs) of the ASEAN Economic Community among ASEAN Member States, analyzing the contributions of MRAs in enhancing the quality of professional services in the Philippines through human resource development.
