The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) will hold a public seminar on December 9, 2019, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, at the PIDS Conference Hall, 18F Three Cyberpod Centris - North Tower, EDSA corner Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.

The event will feature three PIDS studies on technology and innovation, namely, “Issues on Digital Trade” by PIDS Research Fellows Dr. Ramonette Serafica and Dr. Jose Ramon G. Albert, “E-Finance in the Philippines: Status and Prospects for Digital Financial Inclusion” by former PIDS President Gilberto M. Llanto and Senior Research Specialists Maureen Ane D. Rosellon and Ma. Kristina P. Ortiz, and “E-Education in the Philippines: The Case of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Online Program” by PIDS Senior Research Fellow Dr. Francis Mark Quimba, PIDS Research Analyst Sylwyn Calizo Jr., and consultants Ms. Madeline Dumaua-Cabauatan of the Asian Development Bank and Ms. Lachi Pacio of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

The first paper discusses how innovation and technology has opened the door to digital trade and e-commerce and the subsequent challenges. The study also suggests strategies, policies, and activities that the Philippines can pursue to keep up with technological advances and take advantage of the opportunities of the digital trade. The second paper attempts to examine the contribution of technology to financial inclusion in the Philippines and analyzes whether e-finance has enabled the last-mile consumers to avail of financial products and services affordably and conveniently. It also probes into the experience and concerns of digital finance users, and presents recommendations to improve provision and use of digital financial products and services. The third and last paper assesses how information and communications technology has enabled Filipinos to have access to online technical education offered free by the TESDA Online Program (TOP). It also acknowledges the unlimited opportunities of the TOP and provides recommendations on how to improve the program.
