Education has always been one of the most researched areas in the Philippines particularly because of its huge role in Philippine development. This issue of the Development Research News tackles some of the problems hounding the Philippine basic education sector. It examines the various demand-side factors that hinder children from attending and completing primary school as well as maximizing their learning when they are in school. The issue of non-attendance and dropping out are just a few of the problems the Philippines is pressed to address in order to comply with the United Nations` Millennium Development Goal of achieving universal primary education by 2015.
